Just under two months remain until SPIEL (24.-27.10.), the world's largest board game fair in Essen. During the past five years, the event has almost doubled its size and continues to grow in 2019: 1,200 exhibitors, 50 more than last year and a new record, occupy a gross area of 86,000 square metres, increasing by 6,000. This was made possible by the conversion and extension of Hall 5. The range of around 1,400 new games on offer for visitors had already been almost impossible to take in in its entirety; this time, according to organiser Friedhelm Merz Verlag, more than 1,500 new titles are to be presented. The operators also aim to surpass the previous year's mark of 190,000 visitors.

For the first time, a "Preview Night" will take place on Wednesday evening from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the "Congress Center CC Süd" on the fairground, where game premieres can be tried out in advance; the tickets for this event were sold out in a matter of minutes. Also new on Friday is an "Educators' Day", where experts and scientists discuss how board games influence social change, how they are suitable as an educational medium and how they can boost intelligence. The "innoSPIEL" prize will be awarded to a particularly innovative game idea; Ab durch die Mauer (author: Jürgen Adams, publisher: Zoch), Detective (Ignacy Trzewiczek, Portal / Pegasus) and Keyforge (Richard Garfield, Fantasy Flight / Asmodee) have been nominated.
