Italy now has its own game of the year too, and one cannot necessarily say that the jury of the Gioco dell'anno around its president Paolo Cupola has chosen one of the usual suspects: Kill the Unicorns is the name of the winner, manufactured by the small German publisher SpielHouse from Münster under its label Blackout Spiele. The card game's designers are Cyril Besnard, Loïc Chorvot and Alain Fondrille.

Kill the Unicorns originally saw the light of day in 2017 as a Kickstarter campaign. And as it often is with Kickstarter: unusual theme, plus the eye-catching illustrations by Levi Prewitt (141 individually designed cards), and *poof*, 8.000 supporters were on board. According to SpielHouse, the "Schweinhorn", which is also available as a soft toy in the store, enjoys cult status. Kill the Unicorns has already been translated into eight languages and is sold in more than 30 countries.

Among other things, the Italian jury was convinced by the look of the game with its cheeky graphics, congenially supporting the game's concept. According to the jury's reasoning, the bluff game is not necessarily won by the best player - and this is exactly what tempts everyone to go on the unpredictable bluff-driven hunt for the elusive unicorns again and again. The jurors also said the quality of the material and the excellent Italian localization also had impressed them.

SpielHouse describes itself as the "enfant terrible" of the industry with "special board and card games", "bizarre, ironic and peppered with a strong pinch of black humor". The portfolio also includes titles such as the card game Don't Drop the Soap or the new edition of the "intoxicating" card game Grass by Jeff London, first released in 1980.
