(th)

"May makes everything new" is a German proverb, and SPIEL in Essen is also using this month for a bit of spring cleaning: one year and roughly five and a half months after the takeover by Spielwarenmesse eG in Nuremberg, a new logo adorns the world's largest board game fair. The familiar Tangram puzzle remains a design element, but is placed at a slight angle, and the lettering is allowed to "breathe" a bit more than before. This way, the fair's organizer Merz Verlag wants to appear "fresher, more modern", while still remaining "true to the origins".

At the same time, the company wants the new logo to be understood as a "clear commitment to the city in the Ruhr region," where the show has been held for 40 years. Instead of appearing in the subtitle, the location will in future be emblazoned directly in the logo. This refutes any speculation that SPIEL could move to a different venue under the new owner. Carol Rapp, managing director of Merz Verlag, emphasizes: "It was important to us to transport the SPIEL logo into the 21st century, while retaining what it stands for and what reminds many people of the wonderful experiences they've had with us."

At the same time, SPIEL itself is looking to take steps into the future over the next few years, from new hall concepts to expanding the show's app. However, according to Rapp, the core of SPIEL, playing together and enjoying games, will not be altered despite all innovation. This also includes Essen as a venue - "SPIEL is Essen and Essen is SPIEL," said Carol Rapp, who reported that, especially among international guests, one often hears "see you at Essen." The city and the event are to be even more closely interlinked.

The event's website, which will move from www.spiel-messe.com to www.spiel-essen.de on May 15, is also being renovated. According to the company, the plan is not to create a "completely clean business site", but a playful meeting place that is nevertheless modern and clearly structured. Some content, such as the list of new releases or the hall plans, will be available once it's been completed.
