(th)

This year, the Game Designers Association (Spiele-Autoren-Zunft, SAZ) had set up a working group on racism after discussions in the industry about whether some authors perhaps displayed too little political-rhetorical sensitivity. Now there is a result: An international group of game designers, including members of SAZ and SAJ (Société des Auteurs de Jeux), but also non-organized designers, have jointly drafted a multilingual "Code of Respect and Responsibility" that addresses several points on how creators can take more responsibility for the content of their work. For example, the list mentions fair representation of social diversity, careful cultural research, or consideration of any impact on the people represented within the games. The code also calls for games to be accessible to as many people as possible, for an awareness that some forms of humor can also offend, and for an effort to correct one's own mistakes whenever possible. If problematic aspects are found in other creators' work, the intention is to point them out "respectfully" and offer help in solving them.

The SAZ commented: "From many critical discussions in the past, we feel the need to take more responsibility for our games. This Code is a declaration of intent to the best of our knowledge and belief, intended to lead to more reflective action. There are issues of respectful and careful handling of themes and content in analogue games. In our opinion, the game industry also lacks diversity. Many people don‘t see themselves represented in games or at game events. Representation can lead to participation, and the game industry as a whole would greatly benefit from that." The code was initially signed by 75 people, but more can leave their names on the website to support it.
