05.03.2026 - Die letzten Jahre hatte die Essener SPIEL, größte Brettspielmesse der Welt, schon alle Hände voll zu tun, um den Ansturm der Besuchenden zu zähmen, wozu auch eine tägliche Limitierung der Ticketverkäufe gehörte. Allerdings interessierten sich offenbar auch mehr Aussteller für eine Teilnahme, als es die verfügbare Standfläche zuließ. Deshalb wird die SPIEL nach der Hinzunahme der Halle 7 erst im Vorjahr nun abermals wachsen: Wie der organisierende Merz Verlag informierte, belegt die Schau 2026 auch die Halle 8, wo sich bisher ein Wartebereich befand, und damit zum ersten Mal das gesamte Gelände der Messe Essen. Dadurch steigt die Fläche um etwa 3.700 auf insgesamt 81.200 m², den vierten Rekordwert in Folge.
Laut Veranstalter sei die Zahl an Aussteller-Anmeldungen schon jetzt außergewöhnlich hoch, darunter Anfragen für Standvergrößerungen ebenso wie besonders viele Neuaussteller. Merz-Verlagschefin Carol Rapp: "Dass wir bereits jetzt die Öffnung einer neuen Halle und die Vollbelegung des Geländes planen können, ist großartig – und ein Zeichen sowohl für die internationale Bedeutung unserer Messe als auch für die Vitalität der Spielebranche. Die SPIEL und die Branche wächst – und wir schaffen den nötigen Raum für diese Entwicklung.“
Im Zuge der Erweiterung wird auch eine Anpassung der Hallenstruktur nötig, was sich aber nicht in einer kompletten Neuplanung, sondern nur einem stellenweisen Verschieben äußern soll. Den Wegfall der 8 als Warteraum will die Messe mit einem effizienteren Einlass kompensieren: Erstmals öffnet zusätzlich der Nordeingang hinter der Grugahalle Richtung Halle 5 und soll damit die übrigen Eingänge Ost, West sowie Süd entlasten. Gleichzeitig reserviert man in Halle 1A einen neuen Wartebereich, der Anstehende auch bei ungünstiger Witterung schützt. Die SPIEL rechnet vom 22. bis 25. Oktober mit mehr als 220.000 Besuchern.

Apparently also more exhibitors were interested in participating than the available booth space allowed. That is why SPIEL will grow once again after the addition of hall 7 last year: According to organizer Merz Verlag, the 2026 show will also occupy hall 8, which previously served as a waiting area, and thus cover the entire Essen exhibition center for the first time. According to the hosts, the number of exhibitor registrations is already exceptionally high, including requests for booth extensions and a particularly large number of new exhibitors. Merz Verlag CEO Carol Rapp: “It's great that we can already plan to open a new hall and fully occupy the venue – and it's a sign of both the international importance of our fair and the vitality of the gaming industry. SPIEL and the industry are growing – and we are creating the space necessary for this development.”
The expansion will also require adjustments to the hall structure, but these will not involve a complete redesign, only a few minor changes. The fair's organizers plan to compensate for the loss of Hall 8 as a waiting area with a more efficient admission system: for the first time, the north entrance behind the Grugahalle will also open towards Hall 5, thereby relieving the remaining east, west, and south entrances. At the same time, a new waiting area will be reserved in hall 1A to protect visitors from inclement weather. SPIEL expects more than 220,000 visitors from October 22 to 25.
