Oktober 2021.

"All expectations exceeded" - this is what Friedhelm Merz Verlag, organizer of SPIEL.digital, reports about the online replacement of the annual SPIEL fair from October 22nd to 25th, which this year had to take place not at Messe Essen but on the Internet due to the pandemic. The fair's managers Dominique and Max Metzler counted "148,000 individual visitors", as well as more than one million hits for the official live streams. And the platform Tabletopia, hosting many of the new games to be played on the computer, doubled the number of its users during the four days of the fair.

For comparison: according to official figures, 209,000 visitors had made the pilgrimage to the exhibition halls last year - although it has never been specified if these were individual visitors or if owners of four-day tickets were counted anew on each of their visiting days. And while this time more than 400 exhibitors used the Internet platform, last year there had been around 1,200 at the fair. Whether the fair was economically satisfactory for the publishers - Essen is always also a busy sales event - is not known either.

Thanks to digitalization, it was de facto possible for an even more international audience than usual to visit the fair at all. In addition, some exhibitors offered programs until well into the night. In a press release by Merz Verlag, a visitor to SPIEL.digital is quoted as saying: "If you're learning a new game at 2 a.m. with an American game explainer, a German student and an older board game enthusiast - probably of Italian or Spanish origin - and suddenly someone comes along and says 'We are the Brazilian livestream and you are on the air now', ... that's all just great."

The organizers conclude: "Digitally, too, we have succeeded in offering board games a large international stage, bringing people together to play and informing them about the year's new releases." To keep much of the data accessible beyond the end of the fair, the platform www.spiel.digital will remain online until the end of the year as a pure information site without live content. The next regular edition of SPIEL will then - if the public health situation permits - take place physically again. The date planned so far: October 14 to 17, 2021.
